Singer, song writer, film maker and former professional footballer, Dane Sharp, was in town last week.

Sharp was heavily involved in making the film “The Turning Point of the Game: The Abbas Saad Story”, which has already been screened in Asia.

The film is about a Singapore match-fixing scandal which led to Saad being banned for life, whilst proclaiming his innocence.

He scored a hat-trick in the 1994 Malaysian Cup Final in which Singapore Lions beat Pahang 4-0.

Saad’s team-mate, Michael Vana, fled Singapore and is still on that country’s most-wanted list.

The movie is about Sharp’s and Saad’s search for Vana, the man who knows the truth behind the match-fixing scandal and who could clear Saad’s name.

Sharp played with Saad for Sydney City.

Sharp went to England aged 16 to trial with Queens Park Rangers. He played five games for the reserves before being loaned to Plymouth Argyle, where work permit problems led to him returning to Australia.

He spent a year with Sydney City in the old NSL before being signed by Austrian side SV Horn, for whom he played for two seasons.

He then returned to Australia and Adelaide City in the NSL before again heading overseas, to the Tacoma Stars in America.

Returning to Australia, Sharp played in the NSL with Newcastle, and also with a top-tier club in Western Australia, before serious knee injuries ended his career.

That prompted a change of career and Sharp, who had taught himself to play the guitar during long injury spells, turned to music as a career.

Sharp has performed in Nashville, Tennessee, and has also had success on the Australian music scene before this venture into film making.

Also appearing in the film are well-known Australian football identities Andy Harper, Craig Foster and Alistair Edwards.

Interviewees include Fandi Ahmad, the former Singapore Lions coach, former Singapore Lions players David Lee and Malek Awab, and Declan Hill, one of the world’s leading experts on match fixing.
