She replaces John Brierley, who has decided to relinquish the position after 20 years in the job.

Higginson, whose name is synonymous with SpecSavers, was elected unanimously.

Brierley will remain an active life member of Beachside and fully supports the new president.

“As the president of Beachside Football Club for the last 20 years, I felt it was time for someone to step up and move the club forward in 2014,” Brierley said.

“We have introduced a number of very competent and driven people to the committee, with Linda Higginson now moving into the president’s role.

“Linda is very capable of the role and will drive our club forward with youth players in her family playing for Beachside.

“She and the others on the committee understand where the club needs to go to move forward.

“I hope FFT is as focused on the SPL as our club is.

“As a life member, I will be around the club I enjoy and the new committee have my total support and backing.”

Higginson expressed her excitement at her appointment.

“It is a privilege to have been considered for this role after such a short time with the club,” Higginson said.

“Football is part of everyday life for our family and I will continue to serve the club that has welcomed us so warmly into the community.

“We have a number of very committed and skilful people who are giving their time and backing to junior coaching, management and development of our teams in each age group.

“It is now time to consolidate our club to be a viable option for all those out there who want to be part of a community-focused and fun way to get out there and enjoy the sport.

“it is a great time to take on the role and great to see committee members from our SPL 2013 winning side coming on board to develop others in the game.”

Beachside has increased their number of teams from two senior men’s teams in 2001 to a dozen teams in 2013, including girls’ teams and youth teams.

The club is looking to work with Football Federation Tasmania to recruit female players over the age of 13 years for next season.

The club is also on the hunt for a sports trainer.
