Biggest Steve Hudson Cup competition yet coming up PDF Print E-mail
Written by Walter Pless | Wednesday, 01 February 2012 07:15

The 2012 Steve Hudson Cup promises to be the biggest competition being hosted by Launceston Soccer and Sports Club for many years.

“We welcome back South Hobart to defend their title along with fellow Southern Premier League clubs New Town Eagles and Glenorchy Knights,” said Maurie Krushka, secretary of Launceston United, in a letter to clubs.

“We also welcome back Northern Premier League clubs Ulverstone, Northern Rangers, Launceston City, Riverside Olympic, Prospect Knights, our own Launceston United teams, and the FFT State Under-15 Girls team.

“We have ten clubs and organisations entering seventeen teams which has made a challenging task to draw a roster that accommodates all teams.

“On the basis of having an uneven number of entries from nine senior, five Under-18s and three women's teams for the five-week competition, the LSSC organising committee presents [a] roster with the following provisions:

  • Byes in the nine team senior competition were unavoidable, on advice from FFT, as compensation for playing less games than other teams, senior teams with a bye are awarded three ladder points without goal credits.
  • Byes in the five team U18 competition were also unavoidable and will be played with all teams having a bye, no final will be held and winning team being decided by ladder leader after the five weeks of competition.
  • The Women's competition will be played over the first three Sundays and again, the winning team being decided by ladder leader after the three weeks of competition
  • The number of competing teams in the first three weeks also makes it necessary to move two senior games and one U18 game to the preceding Friday night as scheduled on the roster for a twilight match at 6.00pm."

Unfortunately the venue is very average, especially for spectators.

Largest played sport in tassie can only get 5300 to an a- league game, poor effort. Lots of people talking the talk out there but we needed bums on seats, if you didn't go you have let the sport down. You missed a good game 1-1 gold coast unlucky they played good passing football.

I'm not entering into the whole north vs south debate, this is just my humble opinion.
If that game was played at Blundstone Arena last night there would have been AT LEAST 10 thousand through the gate.

Having to pay to get into the games is nothing new. It covers the costs of referees, which are required to be paid by the clubs. So suck it up princess.

The funny thing is there are approx 160,000 people in Launceston area... Match that to the 300,000 in the Hobart area, and they wonder why they only get 5,000 people to a mid week game!!!!!! If they had played that game at Blundstone Arena, or even North Hobart oval, you would have filled at least 10,000! Its called convenience... I think its great we are at least getting games in Tas, and it is great promotion for our Premier League here in Tassie, however do the simple math, and you will soon realise, it doesnt matter the quality of the pitch, the colour of the strips being worn, nor the cost of the admission fee, BUT the location!!! We want bums on seats, lets get a game where there are more bums to put on those seats

Firstly this story is about Hudson Cup, however you may as well stop bagging the South and north west, simple fact is its a school night, and its a big ask to expect someone to travel 2 1/2 hours after work and then return home at midnight, particularly if they have kids, so no one is to blame for not showing up. If a-league wanted a bigger turn out, they will in future roster games on a weekend. As it is, the crowd was double what they would have got at Skilled stadium at the gold coast, so its a win for the A-Leage which ever way you look at it. I have not heard anyone in the press ( that is official ) complain about the numbers, and if you take into account the corperates at the game, the actual figure was probably closer to 6k. Over all every one including Cold coast, Victory, FFA, FFT and the Aleague has been extremly happy with the night and it will grow form here.

On the Hudson Cup, its unfortunate that players have to pay $5, but each and every club knew that prior to nominataing, so if you dont want the warm up games that are very valuable, you can go and arrange your own friendly games, this is Launceston's fund raiser, and good on em, its run pretty well every year, they bang some good coin out of it, and until another club comes up with a cheaper concept, it is what it is. Though I think L'ton should up the entry fee to clubs and allow players on team sheet to go through. But we are used to paying to enter when we are the players in the North.
